The manual on Developing the Capacities of the Arab Countries for Climate Change Adaptation by Applying IWRM Tools was launched during the “High Level Conference on Climate Change Assessment and Adaptation in the Arab Region” organized within the framework of RICCAR[1] from 26 to 28 September 2017 in Beirut, Lebanon.
The manual was implemented under the project “Adaptation to Climate Change in Water Sector in the MENA Region” (ACCWaM) and builds upon regional experience and assessment tools developed under RICCAR to build regional capacity for climate change adaptation by applying the IWRM tools in 5 strategic sectors namely, agriculture, environment, health, human settlements and economic development. For each of these focus areas, ESCWA has organized a workshop with ACSAD and GIZ for the agricultural sector (Beirut, 15-17 February 2016); with UNEP/ROWA for the environment sector (Beirut, 22-24 March 2016); with WHO/CEHA for the health sector to protect it from the climate change effects on freshwater resources (Amman, 19-21 April 2016); with ACWUA for human settlements (Amman, 22-24 May 2016); and in the economic development sector (Amman, 25-27 May 2016). More than 30 AWARENET members have participated in these workshops and contributed case studies on best practices from a national and local perspective.
