The impact of Covid-19 on the Water-Scarce Arab region

A policy brief issued by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) on the Impact of Covid-19 on the water scarce Arab region” estimates that a 5 percent increase in household water demand is expected as a result of the pandemic which is equivalent to 4 to 5 million cubic meters per day in the Arab region.  

This increase would cost the Arab region $150–250 million per month to satisfy additional water needs owing to COVID-19.  The implications of the pandemic on water and wastewater utilities as well as food security issues are highlighted. The brief warns that vulnerable communities with limited access to water supply and sanitation services as well as refugees and internally displaced persons and those living in conflict ridden areas are at higher risk.
