As part of ESCWA’s activities to strengthen water security in the Arab region, and in response to your interest in holding virtual sessions on groundwater-related topics, we are pleased to announce a monthly webinar series under the title “Groundwater Governance.”
The themes of this series were identified based on suggestions received from national focal points, in order to reflect current gaps in data, knowledge, and skills needed to improve the management of these valuable water resources—particularly given their importance in enhancing resilience to the impacts of climate change.
The main topics to be highlighted include:
- Managed aquifer recharge;
- Groundwater monitoring and data collection for developing dynamic maps;
- Sustainable groundwater use and finding solutions to meet the needs of the agricultural sector;
- Participatory approaches in groundwater planning and management – challenges and solutions;
- Environmental changes and the impact of human activities on aquifers;
- Identifying solutions to maximize the economic value of groundwater used in the agricultural sector;
- The use of groundwater modeling to support policymaking;
- Geological and geophysical methods for groundwater exploration;
- Maintenance and rehabilitation of groundwater wells.
Each webinar session will be dedicated to one of these priority topics, featuring case studies that illustrate the application of these concepts at the national level, followed by a discussion with participants.
The first session of the series, on the topic of Managed Aquifer Recharge, was held on Wednesday, 5 March.
The second session, on the topic of Groundwater Modeling to Support Policymaking, was held on Tuesday, 25 March.
